Back in the bus, we descended the windy road from atop Chamundi Hill where we had walked around a marketplace and ancient Hindu temple site, seeing patrons, peddlers, and monkeys. The tour guide in a deep, emphatic tone announced over the bus intercom that we were approaching “the great, huge nandi.” Nandi? great, huge, what? Robin and I were puzzled. Again, the guide bellowed that on our left we would be seeing “the GREAT… HUGE… … NANDI!” Whoa, whatever it was, we didn’t want to miss this great, huge nandi. Turns out it was an enormous statue of Nandi, the bull of Hindu god Shiva, carved from a single piece of black granite. Amazing.
