Vicarious Living

Sometime during my early teenage years I got the idea that my true identity was that of a great gymnast. After all, I've got great calves. It wasn't until college that I took my first (and only) gymnastics class. Gymnastics 101. As it turns out, it wasn't as heavenly as I thought it would be to realize a life-long dream. In fact, it was down-right awkward. We had to wear leotards. I also learned I was pretty clumsy on the bouncy floor, entirely lacking in rhythm and grace. I wasn't very flexible, either. Obviously, my only recourse was hoping I had kids one day and then giving them the chance to become the great Olympian I was meant to be. The second Talmage was old enough, I signed him up with a Parks and Recs program. We go every Monday morning. I spend the whole time gazing reverently at the uneven bars. The Balance Beams. That's pure, raw talent.

A larvae stage hand-stand.
Walking "like a "bear, as Teacher Kirsten puts it.

I love it! He is so cute balancing with those chubby little arms and legs. Your kids are so darn cute!

Can we post the video of your floor routine? It's an instant classic! Also, I want to know more about this place you go that has babysitting while you work out. Let me know!

I love to watch gymnastics, especially the floor routines and I can't imagine how anyone does the balance beam. In college, I actually dated a member of the BYU men's gymnastics team. We took the girls to see the Lady Utes once and we all saw an exhibition at Sea World in 1984 by members of the 1984 Olympics Men's Gymnastics Team. I remember Tim Daggett. I love Talmage's renditions. He looks pretty confident. I might be able to do "between the beams", but I don't think I could strike the larvae pose and I'm sure I couldn't do the bear walk. (And yes, Briton has commented on your great-looking calves!) Hey, I guess I'll be able to get a gymnastics "fix" next month with the Beijing Olympics coming right up.

I look forward to seeing Talmage at the olympics in China soon. Hey we have bought our tickets for Christmas. We are looking forward to seeing you then. Can you get Friton to send me his recipe for Briton biscuits. Have been getting the urge to make them for the kids. I let Khali know that they are legendary. Hope you are all good. Dean, Khali and the boys.

Nice work on the beams! That was my best even too. I would have loved to see you in that gymnastics class; would have been a riot.

It's all fun and games on the gym floor until you get chubby and they kick you off for life.
