Lesson Prep

I'm teaching Relief Society this Sunday. Preparing a lesson alters things around here. In efforts to be more "in tune", I am watching only two episodes of "The Office" a night instead of three. Also, I was looking through old journal entries, trying to find applicable life experiences. The below paragraph describes a moment during my Psych rotation in nursing school. I was working in the lock-down unit for people with severe mental illness:

Today a lady with paranoid/delusional schizophrenia was sitting next to me on the couch. We had not met before and had not, to this point, talked with each other. We were both looking straight forward, not making eye contact. After some moments, I turned casually to look at her, wondering if she wanted to talk. Then she, turned deliberately to look at me and said, with a straight-face and in all seriousness, “You are from the family of Satan."

Probably won't be using that one in the lesson.

Oh, I don't know, maybe you could work it in somehow? Was that ever scary? Mental illnesses terrify me.

Haha, that's a terrific story. Not for your class necessarily, but a great one anyway.
I'll never forget watching a teen bust out of the locked Psych Unit, like a horse from a starting gate. Kids inside screaming "Run, Rico! Run!" but he didn't know which way to go. Poor thing eventually got caught and returned to the pen.

I recall trying to get that point across way back in 9th grade. Maybe that lady's not as crazy as you'd like to think!

Ummm... this is hilarious! Especially it being YOUR experience, I can totally picture it! You were smart to write experiences like this down during nursing school, it makes me wonder what I've forgotten of those treasured experiences!

I think you should still use it as an ice breaker at the beginning of your lesson!

Your blog is great. So you try to post everyday, but those riddles and ostrich pics shouldn't count! I love your voice--honest and facetious at the same time.
