May Cause Suffocation

I heard this rustling around behind me while we were out and about.  When we got home, I found Miles fast asleep in his sleeping bag.

Happy Birthday, Miles.

Miles was really excited about this day.  He knew something special was up.

He got into opening presents.

And then, for the icing on the cake (heh heh), we moved the party to Shute Park.   Hillsboro Parks n' Recs did all the planning and execution for this wild party (i.e. their free lunch and summer activity program).

Briton tried his hand at making these huge bubbles that didn't pop for forever.

Unless the kids got to them.  Here Jack, Talmage and Sydney are going for a slam dunk.

Birthday Interview:

Do you clean your room?  Yeah.  I clean my cars and my trains.  Wait.  When the trains are in my bedroom, I clean 'em up when they're in my bedroom [because it's mom's job when they're not in his bedroom???].

Where do you play?  In that room [living room].

Do you get an allowance?  Uh-huh.  But I can't reach the Allowance Game [i.e. "Allowance", hmmm ... I've heard that word before but have no idea what it really means].

What time do you go to bed? I just tell mom and dad that I'm thirsty.  And then I put them in the fridge [not the parents, I presume].  And then I go to my bed.

What is your favorite food for breakfast?  Pickles and peanut butter.

What makes you happy? Uhhhhh -- Halloween? [like, is that the right answer, mom?]

What makes you sad?  I don't know.  Umma -- people hit me.

What makes you laugh? People make me laugh! [me, too, buddy.  Me, too].

Who is one of your best friends?  Ummuh, Graham!

What are you really good at?  I'm reee-yy good at running.

What did you do today?  Ummuh, I played cars with daaaad.  I played the car game with daaad.

What is your favorite food?  Ummuh, Uhhh,  Uhh,  Hmmm. I think corn on the cob is my favorite food.  

What is your favorite color?  Cheeto! [in the singular].

What is your favorite animal?  Elephant!

What do you dream about?  Lightning.  And I dream about Mack.  I dream about Mater.  I don't dream about the bad cars in Mater Tunes.  'Cause I don't like 'em.

What is your favorite fruit?  Plum.  Plums are fruits.

What is your favorite house?  Cole's house is my favorite house!

What is your favorite thing to do outside?  I like to drive my plasma car outside.

Sandy River.

We drive right past this river every time we head into the Gorge, and always see people playing along the shore during the summer. During one of those 90-100 degree days, I decided it was time to check it out.

The kids mostly played on the shore, building a fort.  Then they scrambled around some boulders, dubbing them pirate ships and shooting each other.   Notice Talmage, aka Tom Sawyer, giving his friend a chance to do all the heavy lifting and hauling.

The Basement

You are not my mother!  You are a Snort!

"Hey! Get those kids out of that hole!  It will cave in one them and they will die!" -- Bob (beloved neighbor).

The kids climbed in and out for awhile.  This will be the G&GK's basement.  One day.  In the unforeseen future.

Come Run, Come All

July is the All Comer's Track Meets.  Talmage and Clara ran a few events.  Miles worked on his dribbling skills.   Sydney elected to stay home with Grandma and Grandpa K.

He's either first or last.
Briton ran an event -- in his serious running attire, including his fashion tennies.

Talmage and Clara are regularly at odds with each other, so it was a treat seeing them work as a team.

Tillamook Forestry Center

One of those hot days back in July, we went to the Forestry Center.  It's got a great, kid-friendly museum.  It also has a non-kid-friendly volunteer who hissed at the kids not to touch the topo relief map or it would "slice up" their fingers.  After that I hustled the kids to the back of the museum where they played with the salmon display at their leisure:

I bet you're looking at these pictures and wishing you could have joined in the fun of hucking dirt clods.   To assuage your jealousy, in the interest of full disclosure, the above merriment did end in supreme anger and tears from more than one participant.

Enter: The World's Best Swim Instructor

This guy is Curtis.  He just retired from teaching elementary school his whole career.  During the summers for the past several decades he been teaching swim lessons at a nearby HOA pool.  In this shot, he's doing "Wishy-washy" with Clara, helping her get used to the water by sticking her in his washing machine.  When she laughs, he muses out loud that somebody added Giggle Detergent to the wash.   The girls thought they were just having fun all month, but Curtis tricked them and taught them swimming skills at the same time.  This seems like an excellent skill to have -- joking around with your kids but at the same time you're tricking them into doing, say, chores or practicing the piano.

The kids aren't so much attentive to the politics as they are to the candy.  This year, we were at the end of the route, and I tell you what, that is the place to be:  candy gets DUMPED at the end.  Oh, yeah.

The City of Roses float upped Hillsboro's credibility rating as far as legit July 4th Parades go (at least in my book).

And there she is.  Sydney walked, i.e. cartwheeled the parade route with her team.

Newport, Take Two.

We took the kids to Newport the weekend after the marathon.

It almost didn't happen because the van broke down on Thursday night.   That sort of set the tone and theme of the trip:  lucky breaks.  That is, thank goodness the van broke down in Hillsboro before our trip instead of during it.  We'll call that LB#1.

LB#2:  State Park Day -- our second night of camping was free.

 

LB#3:  World Ocean Day -- tons of extra demos and activities at the aquarium.  It felt like we were at Sea World.  Except smaller.  And no killer whales.  Or water-skiing. Or dolphins.  Or high-diving acrobatics choreographed to sea lions.  Actually, it wasn't like Sea World at all. 

• LB #4.  Got in for even cheaper than planned because of the staff's savvy splitting of the bill; plus, we had coupons from the marathon

• LB#5.  Aquarium logistics -- super smooth -- got to hit all the awesome classes without back-tracking or waiting and we didn't even really plan it that way.  We just happened to be in the right spot at the right time for Lucky Breaks #5a-z: e.g. clam cooking/dissection class ...

•  But the hit of hits was watching the kids watch the sharks.  Talmage is interested in sharks, of late, and he couldn't believe his good fortune.

LB#etc:

• Visitor's Center was right there, right when we needed it for directions to Nana's Irish Pub
• Miles had his huge diarrhea fest at the restaurant instead of anywhere else where it would have been more inconvenient.

• "A" Parking -- right in front of Nana's, on a crowded street.
• Discovered that bacon, corned beef, red onions, cheddar cheese and sour cream make a GREAT combination when served on French Fries.

• There were seals and even a baby one sunning on the rocks in the tide pools.
• Miles only threw up on himself, when we were stopped -- instead of all over the car and I could       get to him super fast with a towel that I whipped out from under a car seat.  AND we happened to have a change of clothes.

The walk-through cave at Devil's Punchbowl was accessible because low-tide was low enough.  Some guy said that only happens once every five years.  We saw ancient fossils.  Pretty sure.
