Taking the Coast By Storm

What do you do when your two children are sick with runny noses, coughs, and aren't sleeping well during the night? I don't know what you do, but we do everything in our power to disrupt routine and take them ... camping. Again.

Briton and Talmage went on the Father n' Son campout at Cape Lookout this past weekend. Sydney and I had a Mother n' Daughter "campout" - which is to say, we stayed with the McCuen's in their timeshare: a luxurious beach front condo. Perhaps Briton will write about their experience in more detail. Basically, though, both he and Talmage (and everyone around them) slept very little since Talmage woke up coughing and crying every hour or so.

On Saturday morning, the boys drove south to meet us in Newport. We ate hot clam chowder, wandered/ran around on the cold beach, and visited the Aquarium with the McCuen's. Oddsfish! We loved looking at all the sea life. However, after a mini-meltdown x2 in the parking lot, we knew it was time for these tired, traveled kids to go home. Good thing, too.

Because early this morning, Sydney spiked a fever, had green pus oozing out of her ear, and wouldn't nurse. She still had the runny nose and coughing, too. She was so miserable. The on-call doc said to "take her in". So we spent the morning in the ED instead of church. The pediatric MD stuck a sterile swab in her ear (never do that!), and effortlessly pulled out a gob of green goo. He said, "I've been a doctor 10 years and this is one of the few cases I've seen with so much pus!"

Diagosis: Otitis media - middle ear infection. Syd is now on oral amoxicillin, twice a day, and ofloxacin drops to the ear, four times a day. I'm very grateful for access to good medical care.

And, I suppose we'll wait for the storm to settle around here before we go camping again.

Looks like you've given birth to a superstar overachiever. More green pus! I bet the meds made a difference pretty quickly, but then, I'm a believer. Hope everyone gets the rest they need to fully recover:)

Oddsfish??? What the hey??? The odd fish are the ones peering out of the shark jaws and popping up in the middle of a fish tank (love the glass sculptures)! Ah, the Newport Aquarium, I've seen a few in my day, but it's my favorite. I think we've been twice. I'll never forget the first time I saw those orange carrot-looking creatures called "Sea Pens". The jellyfish in the cylindrical tank are also memorable. Glad to know my grandson shares my interest in underwater oddities.
I'm so sorry to hear that Miss Syd (the little trooper) is suffering from an oozing green ear...pretty dramatic. I hope the antibiotics have worked their magic by now. A week of rest and recuperation should get the Sibs back on their feet, hopefully, and give the Les Parents time to regroup.
